Class 8: Top Side Control

This week we work from top side control. This is a very strong position and many people feel more comfortable here than in full mount.

That said I will always encourage you to progress up to more dominant positions: mount, back. These will score you more points in competitions as well as being better positions to control your opponent in.

Our drill this week is the back step. It can be used to help make some space before attempting to take the mount position or to defend an escape attempt.

These techniques can be paired together you will find that the more people are focussed on the one area they forget to focus on the other. You can pair the arm attacks we cover with the pass to mount. While they are stopping you taking mount you can attack the arm bar etc.

It is also worth noting what we did from bottom side control to escape and recognising when they are starting to get the positions that you needed to get out. This will indicate to you when you need to move either to recapture the secure side control you had or move to a different position.

The advanced video this week is a work to the back mount position. This is the first look we have had at the strongest position in BJJ.
